Rugby league?

Rugby League doesn't really exist much in Canada outside a couple teams in Vancouver and Southern Ontario We only had the first League game played in the province last year as a team of Union guys were thrown together as the Alberta Broncos to face off with the experienced BC Bulldogs. If you want to take up Rugby Union though, then you have multiple choices depending on where you live and how far you want to travel. Here's the ERU website if you want to look more into Edmonton Rugby. Training sessions are started by now for all the clubs I believe and the season should begin in May.

Here's a quick description of the Edmonton area teams.

South East: Nor'Westers Athletic Association are the club I'm with and we play down East of Millwoods and North of Beaumont off of Ellerslie and 50th St. We have a solid youth system and now field teams in all three divisions and are always looking for players to help fill our ranks. If you want to know more about them then just send me a message.

North East: Here you'll find the original Edmonton rugby team, the Pirates. They are a fun group of guys who could use some players. They field teams in the 2nd and 3rd divisions.

East Edmonton/Sherwood Park: This is the land of the Strathcona Druids. They have a lot of talent and field teams in the 1st and 3rd divisions.

Central: The Clansmen are the only team to play in the middle of the city which makes them appealing to many. They play right near Kingsway Mall so are pretty easy to get to. Former Samoan international, Trevor Leota, helps coach them. They have a strong youth system and have teams in all three divisions where they are a handful in each. They are also really easy to hate and "Fuck The Clan" is a unifying call for Edmonton rugby players.

South-Central: The Leprechaun-Tigers are another "central" team. They are moving back to their fields this season and are easy enough to get to from a lot of places on the south side. They tried another shot at the 1st division last year but have dropped back down to the 2nd division after a "rough" year. They also field a team in the 3rd division and will probably be fairly competitive in both divisions.

West/Spruce Grove: Here you'll find the Parkland Sharks. They are only a couple years old and field a team in the 3rd division. I don't know much about them except they were having issues finding a place to play last year.

North West/St Albert: St Albert RFC have teams in the 1st division and dropped their 2nds down to 3rds this year. They seem to be the biggest show up there, have some big money supporters and probably the nicest facilities in the ERU. They have produced a lot of quality players including some current Team Canada players like Andrew Tiedemann and Kyle Gilmour as well as some Prairie Wolf Pack guys.

Leduc: LA Crude play out of Leduc. Don't go there.

Keep in mind there are a number of out of town teams in each division so you will have to travel a couple times a summer no matter where in Edmonton you play. Lloydminster, Cold Lake, Drayton Valley, Edson and Grande Prairie have 3rd division teams. Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie field 2nd division teams. Then the 1st division(Alberta Cup) consists of teams from Edmonton and Calgary.
