In scrum after game-winning goal, Matt Martin said Auston Matthews told him he pumped him up with Ott fight. Was pretty special to Martin.

I get the sense you get of the management group, that they are the type of old school guys that would be against giving it to someone young, but I think that's why Dubas is so important in the group. I get the sense (and this can be way off) that he's their young voice. If they all say "No" but Dubas is a strong "Yes", then the older guys reassess their stance on the issue and either determine theyre being too old school or they decide no, this is the right choice, fuck you Dubas.

And I say that because, I get the feeling that Matthews will be the next captain and the only thing stopping them from giving it to him now is, in large part I believe, not wanting to put all that pressure on him.

He already handles himself like the Captain, he already does well in the media scrums, he already answers questions (I want to say perfectly) well and interacts with his teammates, even the vets, like a leader. But give him that C and now it's expected. Now there's less room to make a mistake. Now he has to be in on more media scrums and give more answers which gives way to more chances at making a 'mistake' or not saying the perfect answer and then the Toronto media blows it up, Matthews starts to question what to say the next time or what to do, and now you have a psychological problem with your star Captain which is huge (I believe at least).

He's still a Rookie. He still has so many other things to 'learn' or 'prove' (although admittedly, he just keeps blowing any 'test' up and seemingly goes "Whats next?!"), there's no rush to have him or anyone else be the Captain. They can wait a year or two and make sure he's ready for it.

This management group has been nearly flawless in how they've managed the team. A few things I disagree with, but they're the ones running the team and making the Leafs look like they can once again be one of the premier franchises of the NHL in both revenue earned and quality of teams they put on the ice. So I know it's nice to talk and debate and hear everyone's thoughts on these 'issues' but at the same time, and I think we can all agree, whatever choice ends up being made, and when they make it, is probably going to be as close to perfect as you can get from a management group for this team.

So yea, maybe it'll take a while, or maybe they'll do it after this seasons over but whatever they decide, I trust their judgement. I think they're clearly some pretty smart hockey people running the team now, which is just a joy to type out and actually believe.
