In 2015, a year 12 student at my school was murdered, I believe less than one kilometre from her own home. Her murder was all over the news. I don't remember many details since I was in year 7 and only 12 years old, but I think that the rest of the school events that year were dedicated to her. Although we weren't allowed to wear casual clothes because of the school uniform, I do remember that most students decided to wear yellow, be it hair bows or bracelets for the first few days after the incident because yellow was her favourite colour.
