One hot lazy August evening I was getting ready to go to sleep. I had just layed down in my bed when it felt like something/someone fell or jumped on the bottom corner of my mattress. I recall the impact being violent enough to shake the entire mattress. (Picture someone jumping from the height of a door frame and landing on your bed.) I sat upright, absolutely wired, every hair standing on end. I hadn't been laying down long enough to drift to sleep. I had no pets at the time and nobody else was home. Eventually I decided that I MUST have perceived it wrong. I talked myself into thinking I MUST have imagined it. The hot August air trickling in from the open window was soothing me so i layed back down in my now ICE COLD bed. I mean as cold as an ice water bath. Now I recall only sitting upright for a few minutes at most, and it was a scorcher of an evening. It was so jarring that I slept on the couch that night. I'm not one to believe literally almost anything, but to this day I can't wrap my head around that evening.
