[Serious] When do you know it's time to put your pet down?

My dog went into kidney failure and his BUN and creatinine levels were off the charts. He refused to eat or drink and would lay in the middle of the yard curled up all day. We’d bring him inside and he somehow make it back to the middle of the yard.

We took him to the vet for more tests and the whole car ride he laid in my lap while I pet his head and he refused to shut his eyes the entire ride, I remember telling my husband at that point that he knows he’s going to die because he’d normally fall right asleep if I did that.

We got to the vet and he walked away with the tech. Normally, he’d never let strangers near him and would bark and go crazy, but he just went with her like it was nothing.

The vet confirmed there wasn’t much left that they could do, they could keep him there and try some more treatments, but the cost would’ve been upward of $5,000 and the vet said there’d only be a 20% chance it would work.

At that point we made the extremely difficult and painful decision to put him down. He was clearly suffering and my once strong powerful dog was weak and fragile, it broke my heart.

You don’t really know when for us we could just see that we wasn’t going to get better and sadly I didn’t have $5,000 for the extremely expensive treatment..
