KOLKATA: Controversy erupted at Jadavpur University on Monday after an undergraduate a student of the English department levelled charges of sexual harassment and molestation against a student from the same year and lodged a written compliant of sexual harassment with the authorities.

The girl said she had lodged a complaint against the accused in August last year as well. However, despite being reprimanded and asked to mend his ways, the accused had time and again repeated the offence.

In a post on the social media which has gone viral and has got more than 50,000 shared posts, the victim claims that after lodging the complaint last year, she could not confide to anyone and share her pain. She was maligned and called names and the offender had accomplices not only in JU but also from another reputed university.

The victim along with a few other girls who alleged to have suffered similar incident in the hands of the accused also claimed that his accomplice from the other renowned institute even harassed them on the social networking sites.

On the posts, the girls have claimed to have proof. The victim further alleges that the accomplice of the accused offered the girls who were tormented and ridiculed, internship at her father's firm. The girls alleged that the accused brought the accomplice from the other institute who would often sit inside the classroom to abuse further, thus harassing even more.

According to sources in the English department till now no written complaint has been lodged by the victims who have made posts on the social networking sites. "A group of students had approached the department to lodge a formal complaint but they went back to re-think and assured us to return on Tuesday. The victim however was not a signatory. Instead her friends had approached the university seeking redressal," said a senior JU authority.

Sources further claimed that in August last year also there were no written complaint from the victim. "She approached some teachers and asked for steps to be taken which were done immediately. She seemed to be satisfied. Now if a written complaint is given to the university, we will look into it immediately and take necessary steps."

Registrar Pradip Ghosh however confirmed that a formal written complaint had already been lodged by the victim. Suranjan Das, vice-chancellor of JU, who is in Delhi, added, "I will look into the matter immediately after I return and take necessary action according to the law."
