Shots fired

I don't think the general public is as mad at the book as they are the people justifying why they like it. It's just another shitty erotica book that you see at the grocery store for 2 dollars but it has become a best seller. The narrative does market itself as bdsm while most people will argue that it is not bdsm but a stereotypical abusive relationship. This is a very dangerous idea and goes against most of the modern empowerment of the female, however I do women have the right to indulge in what ever media they want. As a young man in todays culture I think it is very hypocritical and shallow to glorify this treatment of women when we know its application in the real world is frowned about and creepy at the very least. If an author wrote a book targeted towards men that showed a women willing to succumb to our every desire and just willing to please us it would be received as is, pornography, and not defended as a great piece of literature.

It's just another example of people succumbing to basic urges and passions instead of looking for deeper meaningful experiences. This has become a reoccurring theme for our entire society but more more specifically young women in this case. I believe that a large part of our current culture marketplace is geared on targeting emotions, and women more specifically young women are a very emotion driven demographic and this has been exploited massively over the past few decades and it has been opposed and mocked by counter cultures for a long time. A few recent examples include boy bands, the twilight series, and teen magazines that glorify celebrity culture. This isn't as much a comment on women as it is the way businesses target women to make them consumers, they play on their emotions and use that to sell them bull shit while making them feel self conscious enough to defend it to it's core strengthening their attachment to what ever it is they consume.

There is nothing wrong with indulging but the person consuming it must understand that it is what it is and why they enjoy it or they will be even more manipulable in future. Most of the scenarios in this book and the twilight series have come under scrutiny for being appealing in fantasy but dangerous in real life and the fact that most of the fan base refuses to acknowledge this is what truly generates this mass criticism.
