Sick of replacing these air filters every 1-3 months. Anything more permanent?

It depends how your system was designed. Mine was calculated to use one of the fancy allergen reducing wide filters. It just depends on the age of the system and who designed it. The whole system, I mean, ducts, filter, vents, and all. If they were all designed together, then the thicker/more powerful filter will not cause an issue or be too restrictive for the system. Now, if your system is really old and was cheaped out on, maybe it can't handle a modern allergen reducing MERV filter, but systems were being designed at least 25 years ago with these filters calculated for. There is no such thing as a one-size fits-all HVAC system. Every building is a unique agglomeration of calculations/components/air volume.
