Why do some people absolutely hate Life is Strange ?

This game certaintly has more lovers than haters. I myself could be considered a fan of LiS, and I try to get my friends to play it, if I know that they'll like it, or at least find it interesting. But, let's try to be a bit objective to understand why someone wouldn't like Life is Strange:

  • Until the end of episode 4 your choices don't matter in the grand scheme of things; The main story progresses linearly - regardless of whether or not you saved Kate, watered Lisa, blamed Jefferson, or kicked David out of his family, you always end up at the same points in the story with pretty much the same situations all around. Choices, until now, only really influenced 'side quests' and wheather or not some side character likes you or not. So, Life is Strange is not a good game for people who don't care about side quests and where excited about the choice-rewind-mechanic.

  • All collectibles in this game are really easy to get, the only achievements are rewarded for getting through the episodes and finding all the collectibles, and exploration isn't rewarded enough, aside from getting a nice photo every now and than. Also, there's no competition in the game; you don't compete with other players, you don't compete with npcs, and you don't compete with yourself. All the points above repel a lot of gamers, who like those things.

  • Graphics, physics, and lip-syncing are subpar, compared to what is technically possible. So this might put off people who only like the newest, bestest, most demanding games ('can it run crysis?').

All in all, many types of gamers aren't covered by the intended target audience. Extra Credits just released a new video, where they talk about the big four general gamer types, you might want to watch that, and afterwards figure out what type of gamer would be interested in what aspect of Life is Strange, and how prevalent that aspect is in the actual game. (here's the link to that video.)
