[SPOILERS] Film Crit Hulk Smash: LUKE CAGE, Netflix And The Death Of Episodic TV

I think FCH is blinded by bias and got the wrong idea about things. It sounds like, in addition the episodic nature of television that I agree the show kind of failed at (Diamondback shooting Luke and then...leaving) he thinks that Luke Cage should have been about institutional racism entirely.

The very fact that he brings up the 'power' of the Black Lives Matter movement, a movement that more often than not hurts it's own statements with its repugnant actions (blocking traffic, looting, etc.) shows that he really doesn't understand the situation as well as he thinks he does.

Luke Cage wasn't supposed to be all about showing a black superhero getting oppressed by the police or the black experience in a white America. It showed an all-inclusive viewpoint on things.

The show isn't interested in the petty issues of racial divide today because Luke isn't interested, as evidenced by his constant refusal to be called a 'nigga'. The show focuses on black culture in Harlem and features a bulletproof black man, but it's thems weren't about modern racial issues specifically, it only nodded to them via the concept.

I can see how he'd think it's a missed opportunity given Coker talked up the 'bulletproof black man' angle, but I think he's getting carried away by his own political opinions on the subject matter to see what's really going on.
