To store my photos should I use an external hard drive or use a docking station and use regular drives?

for backup only - external USB drive with a "copy" of all the images on my "main PC" - but this USB drive would be updated / unplugged and put away for safety, not left "plugged in"...

This is for "disaster recovery" not "backup" - IE your house burns down, your PC gets a coffee poured into it, someone steals the PC etc.

Also with the advent of "crypto viruses" you want to have things like images on an unconnected drive too..

I personally have a 2 TB external USB drive that is always "connected" but not "powered up". I power it up to do backups then "eject" it and power it off afterwards... You have to decide your own level of "risk" that you will accept :)
