Teachers of reddit what is the most depressing thing a student has told you about their home life?

I’m new to the profession so I haven’t heard that much yet. But I work with English learners and many are recent arrivals to the US. Many of my students have siblings and close relatives in their home countries that they have never met or don’t remember. And if they’re undocumented, or even if they have papers but aren’t citizens yet, they can’t cross the border to go back without putting themselves at risk. Nor can they afford it. One of my students lives with his extended family here because both his parents are still in Honduras. It really breaks my heart seeing the direct impact US (anti) immigration law has on my 6. 7, 8 year old babies and their families.
