TIL the Super Bowl has required national anthem vocals to be pre-recorded since 1993 when Garth Brooks declined to pre-record and then refused to sing live until a dispute over debuting a music video during the game could be settled, resulting in a delayed kickoff.

This was already answered. But she def sang live. The pre-recorded vocals are something they make every artist do, in case of technical failures, or if the Artist refuses to sing.

The idea isn't only that if an artist decides they wont show up, that the Super Bowl will just play the vocals and have the camera pan to nothing. It's there for a variety of reasons:

I. Singer could decide they don't want to sing live, but will still go up there and lip sync. They could do this for many reasons. Maybe they get nervous of singing in front of their biggest audience ever (when you consider its the most watched event in the U.S.). Could be that the artist gets sick the day of. Maybe they strain their vocals during practice. Whatever the reason is, be back up vocals is an insurance to both the NFL and the artist.

II. Technical problems can arise. Right in the middle of the song the mic could cut out. The singers sound levels aren't right, so they start having trouble hearing themselves. Maybe various things are cutting in and out. In that case, they switch to the pre-recorded vocal, and the artist already knows about this emergency plan. So they start lip syncing to it, and are professionals.

III. It's an artist that doesn't sing very well live, but is a huge hit. Most their vocals are modified in the studio, and when they sing live it sounds much worse (so this artist wants to use pre-recorded vocals). I actually think this is pretty rare to. Despite it being easy to assume most pop acts are "fake" and made in the studio, most of the acts that sung at the Super Bowl, were extremely talented.

Most of the time, the vocals are 100% live. But the pre-recorded stuff is there as a back up or insurance. It would be extremely rare that it's used because an artist throws a complete fit and leaves the stadium. In that case I'm assuming they would find a replacement singer. If they can't find a replacement, they would probably just play the pre-recorded vocals and the cameras would do a nice edit job cutting to the audience (because we love patriotism), then cut to our men in uniform (because we love our military!)...and it would all work out.

But that situation never happens. Like ever. So the pre-recorded vocals are more so used for situations I. and II.
