Top Photographers Reveal Their Most Valuable Mistakes - Great Read! [FStopppers]

I found that pretty relevant to me, a similar thing happened recently when I went off to photograph someone at a small gig.

For some reason she's really crap at replying to her messages and I was nearly put off; I'd send her something, wait 2 weeks, ask her a second time...2 weeks after that get a message back, not responding to my query but asking me for something else. Uh, ok...never mind my question then.

Anyway so I get to the area and text asking for help to the venue, no response, I manage to come across it anyway. Look at the timetable, I was told to arrive at 7PM...but she's scheduled for 8:45PM. She's not in sight, she hasn't replied to my message, is she taking the piss? It took me an hour to get there with all my camera gear, no I'm not being paid, I could head to my local station and come back with 5 minutes to spare. I was about to send an angry text and head home, then thought no I'll just head home and not reply to her text, then I thought I'll go get some food and think about it for a bit, I've got 2 hours to kill.

In the end I stuck around, I hadn't shot a gig before and wanted the experience, she turned up and was happy to see me, by that time my rage was gone and the night went great! The guy running the gig approached asking if I could send him some of my photos so I get in contact with him, he didn't need the photos but did ask if I could exhibit some of my Instagram photos in the future :)

So, had I left in a fit of rage, I wouldn't have had some photos for my portfolio and I wouldn't have been invited into that exhibition. The exhibition was a lot of fun too. Sometimes you've just got to swallow your ego a bit.

The last one is pretty relevant to me too, won't go into too much detail but I'm sort of trying that A will lead me to B thing again, I've been volunteering with event photography but they're not really giving me anything in return, maybe doing isn't clear enough and I'm going to need to spell it out to them. Given the circumstances I don't think they could pay me, but they could be a bit more appreciative.
