/u/firewings86 explains why he quit attempting to be a pro photographer

I'm convinced I could become a profitable photographer. This isn't the best advice for well established photographers, but here is how I would do it.

1- understand a bit about how to take a good shot. Once you have this down, review hundreds of engagement photos and wedding photos. 2- build a site with some sample photos you've taken of some of your friends that are couples. 3- post a job at a low rate ($80-$200 flat fee) for engagement photo sessions (2 hours). Stay casual and friendly, maybe bring some extra water and host it at a local green space with plenty of different angles. 4- sort the photos and give them to the couple. 5- wait to be invited to their wedding. Charge a competitive rate, but not high end. You don't want the hassle of crazy flash setups and multiple camera crew ultimately intruding on the experience. 6- say no to the wrong people. Be up front that you are offering a low-stress environment that won't break the bank. This plan is meant for the frugal wedding in the $10-20k range.

I know it would work. In fact - I'll help set people up for the 2018 season for a cut. Brainstorm, websites, finding the first job, etc.
