You’ve heard of women’s studies, right? Dr. Kimmel is the founder and director of the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook University, part of the State University of New York system, which will soon start the first master’s degree program in “masculinities studies.”

from one of the commenter:

Michael Kimmel is a committed feminist, Gloria Steinem is an adviser to Mr Kimmel's program. All of the organizations that attended the event at the Roosevelt Hotel are feminist organizations or aligned with them. Michael Kimmel imagines a world where men became honorary women. All of this drivel is the continuing feminization of the male, which Mr Kimmel and his ilk believe is a bad thing. He talks about masculinity and a shoot up a week, as a sign of masculinity gone awry. He believes men should be on their knees begging the females in their lives to forgive them. Sounds like more feminist bashing men, but now they have men doing their work for them. Feminism manipulating men to do their bidding, it's called "henpecked"

from top commenter:

I am disheartened to read the negative comments here. Kimmel spent a year in the school where I teach, working with faculty, parents, and students, and most of us found him to be thoughtful and his ideas to be helpful. The gender-policing I see in boys is harmful not only to boys but also to girls, and it only grows more stringent as children age. We may as a society have grudgingly accepted that girls can do anything they want (serve in combat, become construction workers, doctors, scientists, etc) but we have a long way to go in extending to boys the same opportunities in traditionally feminine careers. Until men are allowed (by other men, mainly) to become nurses, teachers, stay-at-home dads, none of us will truly be free. Kimmel's work is feminist, a point which is clear when he challenges the many ways men disparage one another using some variant of "you're a girl."

It's also confusing to me that this article appears in the style section, rather than the education section of the paper.

Very disheartening to see b.s. ideologues being herald as better future. Please. Women do not want to work at construction sites and women certainly do not want a stay-at-home dad. Maybe only 0.1% of them would like that. The minute a man wants to be a stay-at-home dad, he can kiss his marriage good bye.

Women being financially independent is not to counter traditionalism so they can provide for men. Women being financially independent only make them seek for men who earn more. So, gender roles regarding "breadwinners" still remain, and it is women who want to enforce it, especially financially successful women, under the notion of "being attracted to ambitious and successful men". Women do not want to take on men's jobs while men get to play with kids. Women want that house they can't afford and want men to pay for it; women make money not to provide for gender-defiant men to resume female roles, but women do it to have freedom to spend however they want without having to adhere to family budget. A man's income is to provide for his family, a woman's income is for her self indulgence, that is why women work, nothing to do with trying to abolish gender stereotypes.
