Veterans of reddit: we hear all the time about the horrors of war, but what is the most positive, funny or beautiful experience you've had in the military?

I want to talk about the way the military speaks. I saw Zero Dark Thirty with an old gf and she said the way the SF guys spoke in that movie made them out to be idiots. I didn't get it. To her is was how carelessly they talked about fucking, blood, and death. How they challenged each other jokingly about their manhood. The way we talk is the best part of the military and that is how we speak. A book "The Things They Carried" has a treasure load of great vietnam talk in it. When we talk about face rolling, skull fucking, dick in the dirt, limp dicked, sick call ranger, hey hero, cum dumpster, cock holster, flush your face, beat your face, and whatever way we use to deal with our emotions in that environment...that is what I miss, the banter, the lingo, the making a shitty time good. I don't care much that I forget people's names I guess because that is how it goes but I hate that I forget what we said and what it was like. It is hard to recall the little things that defined the most important part of my life. I have tried to do more since then so I don't need to always have conversations about he military when speaking with friends. Oh yeah I can speak on this but it involves that one time in the military. Time helps but so much of what I have done with my life is tied to that. Left home, then there were my own bills, now bought everything I own. Some Vietnam vet's can't drop that life. As I move forward. Many people don't understand how someone can joke about rape. You go to the military then you find out how life and death, blood and guts, and everything in between is a joke because we deal with it. We went through it, we fear it, we are taught that is the tough way. I hate the military but god damn I miss it at the same time.
