Veterinarians of Reddit: What is one thing you wish people would know/understand about their pet?

  1. Stop getting mad at your animal for acting like an animal.

In the same regard (not a vet or pet store guy, just a dog owner): even if your animal is not acting like an animal, it still is an animal and CAN act like an animal.

The amount of dog owners in my area that let their dogs roam around unsupervised and harass people and other dogs is just mindblowing.

The amount of people not being able to read basic dog language is terrifying.

No, your dog is NOT friendly circling around us with raised hackles and giving my dog the death stare. Not it was not my dog who started the fight because he barked at your friendly dog that just wants to play.

Leash your fucking dog.

If you have no interest in or motivation for learning about dog behaviour, body language or any other kind of training, DO NOT GET A DOG, even less so a big dog.

Dogs are work, you have a responsibility.

...but in my neighborhood by now in the parks and nature preserve areas 90% of the dogs are off leash just doing whatever they want to do, have no recall AT ALL and just run around harassing people, while their owners have their eyes glued to the phone or having chitchat with their friends.

It's just so normalized by now to have a dog as "companion" with people having apparently ZERO interest in training and taking care of those dogs. It's just so fucking sad.

Even worse is when those dogs than harass other dogs and their owners just insist how the other dog is at fault because their dog is friendly.

Like, you ignored the body language of both dogs, your dog even ignored or simply not respected the body language of my dog, you ignored leash laws and you had no control over your dog at all, but now you are giving me the look of disgust and tell me I need to train my dog better because my dog had to escalate the situation to keep your overexcited untrained dog at bay? Eat a fucking dick.

Pardon my french but this shit is infuriating....and it seems to get worse every year.
