Violent/FPS games and aggression

I don't feel anything towards the violence when playing violent video games.

This is because your brain is able to realize the difference between real and fictional violence.

OP makes it sound as if the actions people take in games are 1:1 with similar activities in real life with statements like

You do not get rid of feelings by taking actions associated with those feelings.

when it couldn't be farther from the truth unless you are not mentally stable to begin with. Shooting someone in Call of Duty =/= grabbing a weapon and shooting my neighbor, no matter if they piss me off by letting their dog shit on my lawn or not.

Not to mention, he seems focused on this notion of catharsis, which can be a reason to play games, but it is not the only reason people do so. Just anecdotally, I have never once picked up GTA because I felt the urge to express violence towards anyone, nor have I stabbed someone in Counterstrike because I felt the want to do so in real life.

Personally, I play games for escapism, and to challenge myself. I'd argue that anyone who picks up and plays videogames in lieu of committing a violent act has much more to blame than merely being exposed to violent media. Hell, maybe being able to pop a few zombies in Left4Dead is preventing those unstable individuals from acting out any violence in their head to begin with.

Frankly, the notion of violent media causing deviant behavior has been around for a long time, even before videogames. Movies went through it, books went through it, music went through it, and now games are going through it. In 20 years when the next big media comes along (I'm guessing housewide-adoption-VR movies/games) anyone harping that violent games causes violent behavior is going to be laughed out of the room.
