welcome to switzerland

Switzerland has had Trump style politicians for at least 50 years.

What makes you say this?

  • Switzerland's foreign-born population is substantially larger than the US

  • It has measurable and enforceable policies aimed at reaching climate change goals

  • It has strict local environmental protections

  • It has a federally controlled healthcare market that ensures universal coverage at broadly affordable costs (~20% lower than the US's in absolute values, far lower regarding purchasing power, and ~33% lower in terms of % of GDP)

  • It has robust labor protections at the federal level that ensure, among other things, a minimum of 20 days of PTO and 7 paid holidays, a maximum (with some exceptions) of 45 hours worked per week, and guaranteed paternity leave of nearly 4 months

  • It has greater press freedom than the US and its government has, in the face of Trump's anti-press rhetoric, heightened its commitment to international efforts to improve protections of journalists

These crucial aspects of Switzerland's governance would never happen under "Trump style politicians". The only parts that are remotely similar to Trump are their immigration laws and protectionist trade policies, but:

  1. They're far more nuanced (both trade and immigration) than the nonsensical political showmanship Trump pushes for, while even in principal, they're hardly unique to Trump

  2. They only comprise a small amount of governance, with much of the rest of Switzerland's public policies being entirely contrary to what the Trump Administration and the GOP's governance results in
