What are the differences between the Catholic and Protestant faiths ?

The Catholic religion focuses on the Mass; the main aim of the Mass is to receive communion (receive the "literal" blood and body of Christ). Protestants don't always offer communion at every service and the communion is said to be a symbol of Christs blood and body. They also call it Eucharist rather than Communion. Some Protestants allow children to consume communion whereas the Catholic church requires Holy Communion to be completed.

Catholic services are the same every time; so usually it will consist of the Priest reading the same pamplet over again.. Whereas Protestants have different sermons each service.

Some Protestant churches accept the Apostles Creed.. The same as the Catholic Church. This is "I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen" Catholics and Anglicans recite this at every service. I don't know/think other Protestant religions do this.

Other differences; confession - most Protestants confess to Christ through prayer, some have Confession boxes and Confess to a Pastor like Catholics.

Catholic church: not many divorces, can only usually get married once, priests are celibate, priests cannot be women. Lay ministers give out the communion.

Baptism: varies by church - age and type of Baptism e.g sprinkle, emerson. Some churches deem Baptism to be vital to salvation.

Salvation: Catholics believe that work and grace are required for Salvation, most Protestants believe that Grace alone will gef them into heaven.

Heaven: Catholics believe in Purgatory.

So, there are quite a few differences below the surface. It is difficult to summarize the Protestant denominations though because some of the Protestant religions are distinct from the others and others are more like the Catholic church i.e Anglican.

I hope this helps.
