What are subtle signs of poverty?

Picky eaters make my blood boil. I just have to vent. I'm sorry for hijacking your comment.

My brother is such a picky eater that he's become malnourished. He gets stopped at the airport because he looks like a drug addict even though he doesn't even drink alcohol. He eats vast amounts of food but you can't thrive by eating meat and white rice alone. He takes such pride in being a picky eater that it's become part of his personality. His health is quickly deteriorating and I bet that I'll be tasked with taking care of him when he hits 50. And I've got enough problems of my own.

My father hit 80 and he's diabetic and he recently decided that all the food is awful. According to him no one knows how to cook anymore. His mind is fine for everything else but his pickiness almost feels like targeted Alzheimer's. The problem is that when his sugar starts to drop he becomes ten times as stubborn and at that point he flat out refuses to eat unless coerced. The other day I went home and found him in his bed sweating and shaking and barely responsive. He was minutes away from a coma. I had to force feed him a plain microwaved potato and a Pepsi to get his blood sugar up and then, when he felt OK, he claimed that he was OK and that he was just taking a nap. It's not the first time that this happens. The paramedics had to get involved once. It feels like semi voluntary suicide.

So when I see somebody in the wild refusing to try new food because it's icky I flat out think less of that person because I'm tired of this shit.
