What was the best relationship advice you ever got?

A friend of mine has that really childish teenage-esque outlook on relationships: "if you don't marry and stay with the person for the rest of your life, then what's the point."

We talked about it and I told her that marriage means nothing, it's just people trying, just like getting into a relationship is people trying, having kids is people trying, building a family is people trying. None of these things mean you'll stay together "forever," cause you probably won't. The value of a relationship is not on how long you'll stay with that person (thank god); thinking any relationship you had is a waste of time make it seem like marriage is the conquest of life, you gain happiness forever as if nothing could change afterwards. We have to take joy out of it while it lasts, even if your current partner won't stay by your side until your deathbed.

mfs grow up with romance movies and it's just sad to see them base their relationships' expectations on that
