Open an account for yourself now. You can do it at any local bank or credit union which has a product interesting to you, but you can also use online banking to free yourself from geographic restrictions.

If you have any doubts, I would open an account without informing her and use that instead.

If she is using the account to give you money, then you can still receive it in that joint account and transfer it or withdraw it as needed.

If she is not using the account to give you money, then she is using it to take money. Or to monitor what you are doing.

Either way, you should not deposit your money into it.

In addition to getting your own bank account (local or online), you need to get your own mail separately as well. USPS and UPS offer mailbox services. UPS is better service, but more expensive. USPS is probably more widespread. Either way, get your important mail sent to you, and you alone.
