What is “Council Communism” and how does it differ from Marxism Leninism and Anarcho Communism?

It’s more of an example of how anarcho-communism can be realistically implemented rather than a true competing framework. Basically, council communism relies on a revolution just like most ML and ancom frameworks, but it specifically roots itself in workers seizing the means of production and dissolve the existing governmental structures.

During this time they form democratic councils rooted from involved workplaces that oversee the decision making rather than have a revolutionary party or militant freedom fighters seize power. So while council communism requires a revolution like most other far left schools of thought, it relies on bottlenecking the means of production rather than conventional warfare.

Don’t mistake the councils with unions, their informality and lack of defined leadership is what makes council communism much harder for a solo power hungry person to seize power but also much harder to enact than a ML style revolution.

Honestly, I have a feeling council communism might make a comeback right now because it’s so heavily rooted in bad economic times. My one criticism is that it often ignores that many ML revolutions occur because the people are not only economically oppressed but also socially oppressed. Many times the revolution is retaliation, not just for harsh material living conditions, but also decades if not centuries of cruel and unusual mistreatment.
