What is a lifehack that seems fake, but is a true lifesaver?

I’m deeply behind knowledge being publicly accessible. We can look at how radically it’s changed the world with situations at the very large view, like the internet, the medium view such as the Khan Academy, and the little view like research papers or professor’s published text books. But in all of those instances, there are real people with jobs making that shit happen, sometimes with years of effort behind it. Volunteerism and free distribution is beautiful, as are the occasional foundations paying for that research and development, but giving-it-away-for-free isn’t reliable for putting food on the table for the people who created those sources.
