what do you think of music education in high school? did you take music against your will too? any stories/ opinions on the subject welcome

I did band in middle school through high school, and honestly it's just not for everyone. My mom forced me to do it because my older sister did, but I was fortunate enough to go to a middle school with a really competitive program. As I prepared for 7th grade auditions, it was announced my school was selected as the top middle school band in the nation and we would be performing in Chicago, so everyone wanted in! I worked my butt off and made the top band (there were three), so I had the opportunity to travel and perform with my school.

At that point I was kind of hooked - growing up playing sports made me a pretty competitive person to begin with, but the opportunity to go to Chicago really lit a fire under a lot of the younger students, including me. This fostered a really competitive attitude within the band and we all wanted to be the best, mainly when competing with other schools at all-region competitions (You would be given a few etudes ahead of time and you would play them for judges, along with all the other students in your region. Then you'd be ranked.). It was one thing to beat your peers, but it felt great to beat kids from rival schools as an individual.

As I moved on to high school, all of this competition grew exponentially. I was competing against kids 3 years older than me, and they were mainly players that went to my recently-awarded middle school, so they were great musicians. I embraced the challenge and ended up making all-state a few times, and my school had the most students represented in the state of Texas during my junior year. I came close to quitting a couple times but I'm happy that I stuck with it.

Looking back on the experience, I might have done it for selfish reasons - to see myself succeed, to be better than the best, but in the end it got me where I am today. I went to the University of Texas and studied music my first year, switched majors and left the world of music behind for a few years. Eventually it called me back and motivated me to get a degree in Audio Engineering - which got me the job I have now.
