What programming skills are required for a DevOps role?

Devops is the buzzword of the month in IT. If you are wanting to get into it I'd say start applying for jobs now. It will definitely give you a better idea where you want to go, you get paid while learning, and you are not spending time learning a technology you may end up not using.

One big thing about devops (and cloud). It is basically a requirement to know some programming. Python is a very in demand language currently (I'm having trouble finding folks), Powershell/C#/.net experience is also in high demand.

About that buzzword comment. There are a lot of jobs on the career sites with devops in the title that are not really doing what the devops philosophy is about. Also a lot of companies touting they do devops but not really doing it in practice.
