What red flags about a company have you encountered while interviewing for a job? [Serious]

My girlfriend just went through a whole bunch of bullshit at what she thought would be a new job.

She was working a bullshit job at a company just to move into my area about a year ago. Basically the company worked dealing with insurance and following up with care providers. She was a glorified button pusher. Call, fill out forms, follow up, continue on. The only reason that job exists is pretty much because they haven't come up with a computer to be able to do the work completely. Boring and repetitive work. So she went looking for a lateral move. Something where she can actually have a project of substance or something better than calling people and clicking boxes.

So she starts looking for a new job. Gets an interview to be an office manager for a dermatology place. This company buys up private practices so it isn't just one hospital or one single building. During the interview she interviewed with the regional manager. Who was from Florida and comes up to PA once a month for a week (weird). During the interview the manager went over details about the job. The location she interviewed at was only 3/4 of a mile from where we live. She was told that would be the office she would work at. On very rare occasions she might have to fill in at other local locations but this would be "at most once or twice a month." Also she was told her hours would be "8-5" with an hour paid lunch. The manage goes on to explain compensation. The base pay was an hourly rate that was $2 less than what she was currently making. She stated that she could not come on board for $2 less an hour. It's just not financially feasible for her. So the manager said "Okay, I can start you at $XX an hour. Just don't tell anyone because this is not normal but your qualifications justify it." It was now just $1 an hour less than what she was making. Which after consideration is fine since the $1 an hour can be easily mitigated by the fact that the new place is less than a mile away and gas/wear and tear on her vehicle wouldn't be an issue. "I can get you to what you were making at your old job within the year." Was the response. Oh she also said that every person she met at the locations she trained at said they don't ever get a lunch.

So my girlfriend is happy as hell. She is out of the soul draining job she used to have and even though it's a lateral move at least it is something she can build on. First day of training she comes home destroyed. The manager training her told her that her actual pay is the $2 an hour less than her previous job. That they average 10 hours a day and she will be working a combination of 8-5:30+ or 10-8+ as well as not working in a set office. She would be assigned according to a schedule and scheduled at various local offices the company owns. These offices can be up to 40+ miles away from where we live and the location she was told she would be working at. There is no mileage compensation either. She had the manager training her call the regional manager up to confirm this. The regional manager pretty much said no to all of the things the agreed upon in the interview and when she got hired.

So she just didn't continue working there. Emailed the regional manager explaining how unprofessional she was and how she screwed her over. She CC'd the manager over the lady and the companies HR department. Nothing will happen.

Moral of the story? Make sure compensation and details discussed in the interview/hiring process is explicitly written out in your offer letter. This was her first job switch. She wasn't aware of this. She will never make that mistake again. I hope that regional manager gets lou gehrig's.
