What should I look for when thinking of investing in property/land in a foreign country?

Which continent/country are you considering?

Why consider investing overseas for profit in realestate when you could be investing in your own backyard.

People are always looking for the next boom town. In fact look into investing in your own community. Develop a relationship with some realtors and keep an eye on how much properties in your own community are going on sale for. I was fortunate enough to get a stress sale at a reasonably good price from a realtor. A womens husband died and she was eagar to move back in with her sister in Poland. I was able to buy th ehouse before it was even publicly listed. I then fixed it up and resold it with the same realtor for a nice profit, thus further solidifying my relationship with him and his realtor agency. I still get emails from him a few times a year about really good deals, and repeated the process several times. I am not the first person he calls but when he does get in touch its always somethign worth considering if the money is good and the timing is right.

Laws regarding real-estate are confusing even in yoru own country, imagine tryign to buy a property through a stranger using a bi lingual lawyer and realtor? I live in Asia at the moment and was considering buy a propoerty. Came to the quick realisation that its just better to rent and avoid any problems I might face.

Another thing to remember is buying a second home or investment property overseas bascially tells everyone in that community your a rich mother fucker. Getting renovations, materials, contract labourers will all become more expensive. Furthermore you will be relying on other people if you are not in the country.

If I get a call from a tenant that their is a flood in my basement property. I'd much rather drive 15 minutes to give it an inspection that have to view the damage by email pictures or book a cheap flight.

I would highly advice against this idea. With the exception of possibly buying in your home land or "old country" as they say. Your question is very vague as well
