Researchers have tried to link it with Ephedra juice, however it's identity still remains.Soma was a common plant found in the Vedic society back then.
As the Veda Purusha says
"We have drunk Soma and become immortal” ~RV(8.48.3)
The Ninth Mandala of RV is entirely devoted to it's praise.
In Somayāgyas such as Athiratham performed by Nambudiris of Kerala the Śatarudriya (from the Krishna Yajurveda Samhita (4.5) of Taittiriya Shakha) is chanted, closing with an offering of soma, considered the only prasāda that is eligible to be offered to the Gods, to Rudra/Shiva
Śiva is to referred to in the Śatarudriya as "andhasas pate" meaning "O Lord of the soma plant".
Note:Andhasa is the juice of Soma plant
Check the preparation on Somayagya from Srimad Bhagavatam here
In case of unavailability of the original, the replacement plant used is Pūtikā (पूतिका), which can be used in Yāgas as a substitute for Somalatā as described in the Mahābharatam. Here is an imagine of Pūtikā
Pūtikā has been postulated to be Sarcostemma acidum/brevistagma, which is an endangered species and not characterized as a hallucinogenic. It is a medicinal plant described in great detail in Ayurveda.
The Mahabharata and RV describe the highest quality soma as found on the Mujavant mountain, on the northern edge of the Tibetan plateau. (Soma is therefore also called mujavata = of the mujavan mountain)
Reference- Mahabharat 14.8
Priests would procure soma for Vedic rituals from the Hindus who resided in Northwestern India, who plucked soma from Mujavant mountain, throughout the Vedic age.As time passed & due to repeated invasions in the south,it became hard to procure the endanger Soma. However,Somayagis from Andhra procured Soma from the Himalayas until the Sultan of Golconda prohibited it.
They all began using replacements recommend is Sástras & Mahabharatam. The first replacement was Adara, used by Nepali samavedis.
Western indologists have intentionally tried very hard to debase the Vedic traditions by associating Soma with hallucinogenic & claiming that our ancestors Consumed Hallucinogenic compose the Hymns.
I don't understand this man,you are asking really weird questions. If you are really interested in this, then please ask elders to retain contact with the Mutts & Shrauta Brahmins again.
