Personally I would ignore and not worry about what others think.

I am non Indian and have been on the path of Santana Dharma for many decades and have had a few similar incidents - e.g. "you cannot be a real Hindu because you were not born into a varna!" I assure them I would never have the audacity to think I am a Bhramin if that is the concern. Call me dalit then if you need to label me with something.

I don't even refer to myself as a Hindu anymore. In the end the label is not important to me, only the end goal. My actions and my intentions are known by God that is all that matters to me.

Don't let this foolish talk interrupt your peace my friend.
