What word or phrase instantly let's you know someone is American?

The American obsession with their ancestor's birthplace kind of weirds me out

It's a unique nation in that it is comprised mostly of ex-pats, immigrants, et cetera, from other nations, many settling here in the last 100 years. I see a lot of jokes on Reddit about Americans claiming a certain ancestry, which is true. It's just something that defines who you are as an American and where you came from. That pride wouldn't exist if their originating nations weren't prideful themselves.

People need a history, especially in such a young country. There's nothing wrong with it.

I celebrate Mardi Gras by doing the courir de mardi gras and sing a song similar to this at the end of the run before we eat gumbo, cochon de lait boucherie, Cajun boudin (different from French boudin), jambalaya, etc. We pretend to believe in werewolves (loup garou, rougarou) and have festivals based on it...all of which are traditions from France in the 15th century and later. I claim Cajun first, American second, and French by ancestry third.
