What's the fastest way you have seen somebody fuck their life up?

Really late to the game here, but.

This one I still think about often. When I was in first year of college, I met a few dudes who were into the same things as me hobby-wise so we clicked pretty fast. One of the dudes had some friends that were in second-year and were known for heavy drug use and wild parties. Me and the other guy weren't the biggest party-goers, so we never went with him.

One morning he told us that he had done a lot of E, coke, and smoked weed all night, but we kinda figured and didn't think anything of it. Then things got really weird. He stopped going to class altogether and slept for most of the day. Then it got REALLY weird about a week later. He started making really unusual remarks, asking us why we were talking about him, calling him names when he was in earshot (we weren't at all), and why we didn't like him. The one day he DID go to a class, he came back and said that the teacher was doxxing him in front of the entire lecture hall that he was a weed dealer and was using him as an example for something. We had no idea where any of this was coming from and obviously a professor wouldn't do that. Then one morning we knew what was happening. He came to us and started telling us about the two men who appeared on the tv during the night. He said his tv turned on, and there were 2 men in black suits against a blue screen interrogating him about him selling weed. He was POSITIVE that it happened in real life and people were talking to him through the tv. Keep in mind, we knew this guy maybe a month and a half at this point. We immediately realized after this talk that he was spiraling into a psychosis. We ended up having to take his phone while he was asleep and found his mom's number. That phonecall was horrible. We had to basically say "you don't know us, but your son isn't well and you need to come get him." We explained everything that happened and apologized profusely. You could hear the devastation in her voice. She came to get him, and he was SUPER pissed at us because we called his mom, AND that we didn't believe him about the TV coming on. We didn't hear from him for close to a year, when he messaged the other guy and asked him to phone his mom and tell her that he wasn't crazy and that all of those things did in fact happen. Seriously so sad to see it happen to someone. I can't imagine being his mom receiving that phonecall from strangers. I have him on facebook and he is still living at home in his hometown close to 5 years later, and makes unusual posts from time to time.
