What's the most embarrassing date you've been on ?

Hardly even a date per se, but here’s the story. Senior year of HS my best friend and I were both dateless losers. I didn’t go to my HS prom, I had no interest, but my friend was a little more traditional and really wanted to go, and not alone. So somehow his moms friend had a daughter only a year younger, they had never met, but she agreed to go with him as friends. But they’d need to need to meet once in advance in a group setting to make sure my friend wasn’t a complete creep. So we planned a double date/hangout one Saturday afternoon with her and a friend of hers.

The plans were, we were gonna shoot some pool, grab some food and then see a late movie. My friend drove and we picked them up. My friends potential prom date was a bit chubby but cute. She was pretty friendly and talkative. Her friend, my “date” was a total smoke show. However, it was clear from the second we got there she would have rather been doing anything else. I’m absolutely no prize (and was even more of geek back then) but I’m a nice guy and not aggressive. I knew from the second I met her she wasn’t interested but still wanted to go and have a nice time like we planned. We sat in the back seat, I tried to talk to her a bit, but gave up after a few minutes. She was looking out the window and giving one word answers. I took the hint. My friends date meanwhile was having a nice friendly conversation and getting to know him a little bit.

We got to the pool hall and shot one game of pool, I can’t remember exactly. It was a very short time, had to have been maybe 30 minutes Max. My friends date suddenly excuses herself to phone home (pay phone, this was the early 90’s) and check in with her parents. She comes back and informs my friend she’s so sorry some relatives showed up unexpectedly at her house and her parents are demanding she come home immediately. So basically the classic I need to leave excuse. I don’t know if it was her idea or her friend forced her or if they planned it even before we went out. But I can tell you that was pretty fucking embarrassing. My friend drove them home, I sat in complete silence while my fiend politely chatted with his date.

When we dropped them off my buddy asked me what I thought. I felt pretty shitty about the whole situation. I thought that was a lousy thing to do, make plans and then exit after 30 minutes because you’d rather do something else. I mean sure if the dude (or girl) is being a total asshole then I get it, but that wasn’t the situation. I told my friend I would never hang out with those girls again (obviously it was mutual.) He seemed to think it may have been the other girl, not his date, who demanded they leave. He wound up taking her the prom anyway, but never spoke to her again.

So yeah being on a hang/date where the girl could not bring herself to speak or even look at me, that was the most embarrassing.
