My younger brother has a whole mess of behavioral issues, and my mother has no idea how to read the room. When we were teens especially they would often butt heads and my brother would become violent. I should also mention my mom had us in her mid to late 40s, so shes been an old woman for as long as i can remember. 2 or 3 times a week Id have to run to her defense after she had pushed my brother too far. Often times it would happen in the middle of the night, after i had fallen asleep. On one particular night i woke up after hearing a loud crash. As i groggily got out of bed, trying to prepare myself for another fight i heard my mom screaming my name with desperation in her voice. I immediately ran downstairs to the kitchen to see my brother towering over my mom with the refrigerator door raised over his head. I tackled him and pinned him to the floor with the door on top of him. I held him there until he calmed down and agreed to go to his room. I think he wouldve killed her had i been any slower to get out of bed. Im in college now and its just my mom and brother alone in the house now. Im terrified some day it will happen again, and i'll have to live with the guilt of knowing i couldnt stop it.
