"Know what's pretty neat about the U.S.? We didn't kill 300,000 civilians during a civil war in 2003, that's a fucking plus." - 600+ upvotes and gold

Here's an interesting comment I quite liked from a while back. Fresh perspective on dictatorships.

Now about that article you mentioned. It's url was truth-out.org which sounds totally unbiased. And their source for that number was from Physicians for Social Responsibility, again, no bias detected. And the location of that "over a million Iraq civilians", page 30.

Despite the furious criticism it attracted, most experts see the second Lancet study The study is based on a poll of a representative selection of 1,850 households and almost 13,000 participants. It compiles the deaths both in the 15 months before and those within the 40 months after the start of the war. According to these data, the mortality rate rose from 5.5 deaths per thousand inhabitants in the year before the war to 13.3 per year thereafter.

Keep that number in mind, 1850 households.

Lets look at the more news-y estimates.

Huffingtonpost estimates half a million total Iraqis

according to an academic study published in the United States on Tuesday.

BBC estimates 461,000

based their estimate on randomised surveys of 2,000 households.

National Geographic counts half as well.

according to a groundbreaking survey of 1,960 Iraqi households.

America Aljazeera counts a full half million

The latest and perhaps most rigorous survey, released Tuesday, puts the figure at close to 500,000. ... included a survey of 2,000 Iraqi households in 100 geographic regions in Iraq.

So all these news outlets source the same exact study. That study is here by the way if you're interested. Well look at that, reference number fucking one, the reference from which they got the data they analysed, fucking Lancet.

So all these news outlets have cited the very same study. Somehow the Huffingtonpost, BBC, National Geographic, and your "Anti-war news - for people who think" sites all looked at the same 1850 households, but for some crazy reason, got different numbers. Almost all got half a million and the other got a full million. From the same fucking study.

Do you see how "truth-out.org" might not be the best source for shit?
