What's the scariest situation you've been in?

I'm not who you were responding to, but there aren't any particularly dangerous animals in Maine. There are black bears, but they're usually big scaredy cats and will run away if you so much as glance in their direction.

We supposedly don't have mountain lions (there have been a few unconfirmed sightings). Coyote attacks are really rare and almost always happen to small kids playing outside unsupervised. Wikipedia says a coyote bit a hunter in Maine 10 years ago.

Moose generally aren't a problem if you keep your distance, and they run away if you get too close. They don't go after people unless threatened. They're mostly dangerous for drivers.

Nuisance animals while hiking are usually the smaller ones, skunks, raccoons, fisher cats and the like. They're mostly dangerous because they can carry rabies and they'll get into your food if you aren't careful about storing it.

I don't know anyone who even carries bear mace. And no one carries a gun hiking unless they're hunting. It's just unnecessary. The most dangerous things in the Maine woods are ticks and no weapon will save you from them.
