What's the smallest decision you made that had the biggest impact on your life?

A long time ago I lived in London, where I was pretty miserable feeling like my life was going nowhere.

One Saturday afternoon I was in the supermarket and on a whim bought some bacon. I normally wouldn't, but I suddenly realised I really wanted a bacon sandwich. It was a split second decision that I'll remember for the rest of my life.

I got home and my housemate was there. He saw the bacon, which reminded him that later he was going to meet his Danish friend (the Danes make great bacon) and asked me to join. I said yes and went along.

In the bar this Danish guy was talking about moving to Australia. He made it sound awesome. Of course, at that point I'd had a bacon sandwich so was in a pretty good mood, which I suppose led me to being open to new ideas. It got me thinking, and a few weeks later I decided to move to Australia too.

So there I was in Sydney, not knowing a soul (Danish bacon guy moved to Melbourne). I went online and found a new-in-town meetup (it was actually Gumtree back then) and met some new friends.

I got on with a few of these guys and started hanging out with them regularly. A couple of months later one of the guys was invited to a BBQ, so invited me along too. I'm not a massive BBQ fan, but I remembered I really liked that bacon sandwich I had back in London so I went along.

So I went to the BBQ and met a girl there. We hit it off and ended up getting together. A couple of years later we go travelling before moving permanently to her country.

We buy a house, get married and now have two kids (neither of whom like bacon).

I owe it all to that fateful day when I bought bacon. Thank you, bacon.
