I wish I'd never answered the phone

I'm the second of 5 children. My older sister and I were often left in charge of our younger siblings while waiting for at least one parent to get home from work, errands, or whatever. Leaving 5 children home alone was not frowned upon back then in the late 80s early 90s. We lived on a ridge pretty far out into the country. There were about 6 homes on our particular lane and we were all surrounded by 97 acres of woods. Anyway, one day when i was about 12 after my mom had left and my dad hadn't gotten home, the phone rang. I answered. On the other end, there was only heavy breathing. I hung the phone up after a few seconds of no response to my "hellos". This happened about once or twice a week for the next several weeks.

Fast forward. One day, my parents needed to go to the store and we were left home again. The very second my parents pulled out of the driveway, the phone rang. This time, there was a voice on the other end. It was the voice of a man and he began saying very sexual things of what he would like to do to me and vice versa. I let my sister listen in. We giggled in our innocence to the things the man was saying. Until he began describing us and what we were wearing. I immediately slammed the phone down on the receiver. My sister and I looked out all the windows and saw no person. We locked all the doors and locked ourselves and our siblings in the bathroom until my parents returned. After giving them the details of what was said, they called the police. The police spoke with the phone company and had a trace put on our phone line. This happened several more times that the phone would ring the second my parents left the driveway.

After a few weeks of normalcy, something happened that I'll never be able to explain. We were home alone again and the phone connected to our computer rang. This number was different than the main and was only used for our dial up service. This number was unlisted and nobody had it, not even me. My curiosity got the best of me and I answered. It was a 911 dispatcher. She said she just received a call from that number and the person hung up. I explained it was a computer phone and also about the creepy sex talker. She agreed to contact the police and phone company about putting a trace on that line as well. No more than a second passed after I hung up and the phone rang again. It was the heavy breather. I asked him what he wanted from us. He said, "I'm here." There was a knock on the door and we all screamed. Just then, my parents pulled into the driveway. There was no more knocking, no one was ever seen in or around our property, and there were no more calls.

Sometime later in the month, the police came to the home as they had information about the trace. Every call to the main line had come from our computer line. My sister and I felt on many occasions that we were being watched; and I swear I woke one night and saw a man with his face pressed up against my bedroom window. Well, we made it through our adolescence and teenage years without any more issues. However, I'm 35 years old now and still disturbed by this experience. Sometimes it's better not to know the whos, whats, wheres, whens, and whys. It drives me crazy, though, thinking of the answers to those questions. So, heavy breather sex talk stalker guy, let's not meet!
