You have a few options.
Look at modsquad jobs on flexjobs, they have similar work to Appen and you can live anywhere, make sure to select the "international" or "work from anywhere" job postings.
For Appen, you have to be extremely careful when using VPNs or proxies to work for them. But, IT IS doable. They WILL ban you if they figure out you're working outside your region (I lost an account myself). Make sure you know what you're doing.
Proxies are better than VPNs if you don't know how to stop your VPN from leaking your IP address. For proxies, don't use free ones, find a service that has "residential proxies", DO NOT use shared proxies. ALWAYS check to see if your VPN or proxy IP is on any blacklists. DO YOUR RESEARCH.
You can also set up a VPS on AWS, but I don't know much about that option.
Since you have a home in the US, you can set up a Raspberry Pi as a VPN server at home. That'd be the best option in my opinion. Check out the VPN subs on reddit for How To guides.
