Is it worth investing in ETFs if I'm not sure I'm going to be able to retire early?

If I was in your position I'd max my super out and pay off my house. with $28k in super at 45 and $50-$80k income you'll be hard pressed to even be able to retire at preservation age if you don't salary sacrifice, you're ~20 years behind where you should be. That being said if you're able to contribute around $15k/year into your super with a 5% return by the time you can retire you'll have about $570k, if you can up that contribution to $25k/year it'd be $900k. With your wifes super included assuming she isn't salary sacrificing and stays at $100k/year income she'd have around $860k by the time she could retire.

You could both definitely live off your combined supers although I don't know if what you can afford in retirement is what you've envisioned your retirement to be.
