The X-Files returns January 24th, 2016!

Some very interesting information there. Glen Morgan is listed as an executive producer. Does this mean Morgan is the co-showrunner (like he was with James Wong when both their names appeared at the end of each season two Millennium episode)? Or is it a slightly lesser level of involvement, like when Morgan (along with Wong, Gordon and Gansa) was a "co-executive producer" in season one (which may mean, de facto, all were basically co-showrunners), but Carter was the sole "executive producer" whose name appeared at the end of the episodes (i.e. Carter was still the official showrunner)?

Likewise- what has happened to the purported involvement of James Wong, and Darin Morgan? Are they involved as contributing writers and possibly a lower level of producers, or is it just Glen Morgan working with Carter after all? Wong and Darin Morgan's involvement has always been vaguely described so far. I haven't seen an official confirmation anywhere that they are on the show- only Carter or Glen Morgan hinting that they are (or that they may be- I believe Carter used the word "trying" in reference to getting them back). But they aren't on Twitter, unlike Glen Morgan, so they never confirmed it themselves. It does seem plausible Wong (who is busy on other popular series right now, though not quite as busy as Gilligan) might have time to advise on the new X-Files or even reunite with Morgan to do a couple of scripts, but would not have the time (or possibly desire) for a larger production role. Likewise, Darin Morgan was never known as a producer- even at the height of his involvement in season three as a script editor and three-time writer, he didn't have a production credit, let alone as an "executive producer." So I'm just going to hope they are still involved, even if only Glen Morgan is an executive producer (which I personally take to mean as- co-showrunner, whose name will appear after each episode). It is slightly disappointing Wong and Morgan aren't both executive producers, because just as Carter and Morgan/Wong seem to do their very best work together, Morgan and Wong themselves seem to do better work together than separately (with the sole exception of the Never Again episode- Glen Morgan's solo masterpiece). Then again, Carter and Glen Morgan working together as writing or production partners is also an unprecedented situation (of all the XF crew, there was more tension between Carter and Glen Morgan than anyone else- Darin Morgan and James Wong seemed to get along much better with Carter than Glen Morgan did by the end of his time on XF) and that might have a very good and interesting outcome.

Finally- does the fact it will air at 8 pm once it settles into its regular Monday time slot, have any implications regarding allowable content? I realize things may be a bit more lax today, at least with regard to horrifying violence being shown on broadcast TV, so perhaps an 8 pm X-Files today can get away with more (if they wanted to) than a 9 pm X-Files back in the day... but 8 pm still seems like a very early time slot for an adult oriented (no- not that way!) show, and I'm concerned that, even if timeslots hardly matter anymore, Fox's choice to air it at 8 pm rather than 9, might indicate that Fox's vision for the show (which they may be attempting to impose on Carter/Morgan in other ways too) is that the show should be primarily "family oriented" or a bloodless PG-13 escapist action piece similar in tone to a blockbuster Marvel movie (or the first X-Files movie and the later mytharc), rather than the sort of show where you might have disorienting and disturbing episodes like Home, Jose Chung or indeed, Duane Barry.

I hope this concern is unfounded- but we can't really know yet- right now, as they are only entering the process of making it, even the creators also might not know what kind of exact expectations and memos and "recommendations for improvement" they will be getting soon from Fox as they finalize the scripts and go into production. But knowing the show will air at 8, rather than 9 or 10, might give Fox more grounds to alter or censor any "adult themes" (or politicized content for that matter), that's what worries me. Yes, I know graphic sex or violence will not be present under any circumstances, and I agree with Carter, having those wouldn't necessarily improve the show- it's a classically cinematic show- those things are suggested via visual poetry rather than shown explicitly. I even side with Carter's cuts to Never Again for the same reason. However, that episode, like all the original show, aired at 9 pm- which made it acceptable to explore "adult themes" even if to do so in an inexplicit way. I haven't regularly watched broadcast TV in years, but it's my understanding that the 8 pm hour is not that welcoming to "serious" drama (or even comedy) shows aimed at adults, rather than kids. After all, why should it be, when many adults are still getting home from work on weekdays at that time, or have just gotten home and are trying to eat something before thinking about turning on a TV. It just seems weirdly early... perhaps indicating Fox views this as not a serious artistic show at all, but just a franchise cash cow. In which case it's hard to imagine what Fox might make of, say, a new Darin Morgan episode airing at that hour. They might insist on changes...
