In your opinion what is ruining society?

Reality television is ruining society.

Reality TV is like junk food (but for the brain), a total guilty pleasure. But like junk food it is absolutely terrible for us.

Reality TV personalities promote rude, selfish, materialistic behavior. The most popular and successful reality stars tend to be mean and incredibly narcissistic. Most importantly, they are not empathetic. Reality TV also promotes lifestyles and storylines that are not based on reality but are creating unrealistic expectation for fans. They are presenting lifestyles that are unattainable.

How is it ruining society? Think of people who have grown up watching this and how they interact with each other.

Recently I had the opportunity to get together with a group of friends. One of the people in attendance is a principle at a middle school and she explained to all of us what school is like now; what was most alarming was how kids talk to each other, specifically girls. They speak like these reality TV stars, really vulgar, provocative and outrageous things. They say them so it’s loud enough for other people to hear passing by; the more outrageous the better response – sound familiar? Unfortunately these comments are not just left to the classrooms or the hallways; it also involves social media, Facebook and Twitter, etc. That’s right, it is now out there for the world to see. This terrible behavior, this need to over share like their reality TV personalities is broadcast instantly and will be attributed to them. Have fun explaining that during a job or college interview…

Finally, one of the more upsetting aspects about reality TV is that it is broadcast all over the world and is believed to be representative of American values. This is the image that is being projected. That scares me.
