She didn't know the vast majority of these things had PPI included, so she wouldn't have got a penny for it.

Yeah, she's paid about a thousand pounds in costs. Sure, if she'd had the time, knowledge and understanding then she wouldn't have had to pay that; however this is a woman in her late 60s in poor health and without the skills to go into it all herself. You can look at it that she's lost a thousand quid, but she looks at it as having gained six grand she otherwise wouldn't have. Two sides of the same coin. She's hardly "blown it".
