In the 50's, we ran a nationwide system of interconnected mass transit into the ground so we could have this.

Does no one in this thread realize why the fucking interstate was built at all? We had just come out of a global fucking war that had leveled the entirety of the Western World besides us. One of the main things we had struggled with during the war was mobilizing a continent worth of people and resources and moving raw and war materials around. It took 3 weeks to cross the country by truck. It was impossible to move mass amounts of soldiers via the roads available, and completely impossible to move heavy war equipment. The United States needed a nation-wide road connection system in order to prosecute a modern war. Trains do not cut it, not even in the slightest when it comes to mobile war so recently recently practiced.

The ancillary effects of the road-net are apparent from the course of history. Access to mass thorough-fares allowed American cities to sprawl and disconnected city workers from their workplaces. Once that pattern of city-building set in, no amount of public transportation will ever be able to overcome the utility of a personal car. That nearly inevitable path is simple an effect of a purely military decision.

You are crying about a conspiracy that did not exist. It is completely ludicrous that anyone familiar with the history of the Interstate System would believe this. It's fucking unbelievably ignorant to believe that President Eisenhower, the extremely accomplished WWII logistician, would be coerced or manipulated into implementing the public works project that bears his name?
