90 years ago as the Great Depression set in, how long did it take average Americans to comprehend that they were in a long term, serious crisis? Not just a market correction?

My Grandmother told me this: She was the oldest of 5 children, her father ran out on them and never saw them again. Her Mother had no job or options and they 'walked' from Arkansas to Ohio. There her Mother found work and worked about 16 hours a day. During the day she would take care of her sisters and brothers full time. She dropped out of school in the 6th grade. She told me she had a vegetable garden and would goto the butchers and beg for a milk bone that sometimes she would get, sometimes not. She would say they would eat the same soup from the vegetables she grew (she always loved gardening and did until the day she passed) and from the milk bone, which she said you could get quite a bit of meat that the butcher left on it (maybe on purpose?) but mostly for the marrow.
