[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Slowdive - Slowdive

One thing I find funny about the Slowdive "reunion" is that three quarters of Slowdive actually released an album "only" 11 years ago in 2006, and they also released one in 2003, 2000, 1998 and 1995. There are actually nine full length Slowdive albums. Mojave 3 is actually Slowdive, minus one member (spoiler: not Goswell or Halstead, both are in the band). Pitchfork didn't like those five Mojave albums, so they apparently don't exist, but the first one is on par with Pygmalion and better than the self titled and Just for a Day. It's actually almost as good as Souvlaki.

Plus, they were touring continuously together under that name since 1995, even one tour as recently as 2011. So they really just took a three year break before "reuniting" under their old name Slowdive in 2014. Hell, Fleet Foxes took twice as long a break. And most long running bands have changed more of their members than the one member difference between Slowdive and Mojave. I mean... Dirty Projectors anyone? Modest Mouse? Even Fleet Foxes?

I just watched the Pitchfork documentary on Souvlaki, which is flawed by the fact it doesn't even mention either Pygmalion or Mojave, acting like Souvlaki was the last thing Slowdive did together for 20 years to try to make a neat storyline. Hell, after watching that Behind the Music drama, it would shock anyone to learn Halstead and Goswell continued working together almost continuously from 1993 to present!

Nevertheless, it was pretty good, and informative because it reveals something I was never aware of, as a millennial who got into music in the 2000s in a very pro-shoegaze environment. Back in the '90s, Slowdive were very unpopular and got terrible reviews from critics, even for Souvlaki. That's why continuing under the name Slowdive was not an option. The name was a kiss of death. The first Mojave album was actually intended as Slowdive's next album but then they were dropped from their label and decided a new name would help promote the music.

Anyway... Pitchfork exactly reversed the flaw of the original critics who slept on Slowdive, by sleeping on Mojave 3 and giving all their releases shitty reviews, and basically pressuring Slowdive to "reunite" (change their name back). Now everyone says, "damn, how are they still so good together after 22 years??" Umm because the members played together almost as continuously as Radiohead in that time.
