Was it always like this? Where marriage was considered a burden, or a curse, or just in general something to be avoided?

I think your pastor is watching cultural norms but isn't bothered enough to actually talk to people and get their perspective.

People aren't delaying marriage because "they want to have fun." They are delaying marriage BECAUSE they value it so much, and want to be able to afford to do it right. Meaning, they want to be able to afford a respectable wedding, move into a respectable house after, and start planning children. It's just... People are much poorer now than boomers were in the 70s and 80s.

Study after study has shown this.

Now, COULD these people get a courthouse marriage and go to their apartments after? Sure. But they don't feel that would be respecting marriage to do that.
