Oh yeah, I forgot to say the important part. The reason I'd gone there that day is she said her step father is at another farm, and for some weird reason I took the bicycle she and I had been sharing, which was a red girls' bike, and just left it intertwined with his on that other farm and left. She had said "go after him!"

When he got back, I was just in the process of them playing a really dumb game with me involving us sort of pretending that my bike lock was like a token of death or something. When the stepfather got back, he saw me coming towards him with a weird expression on my face, holding this chain and padlock, and he said "Let's have no unpleasantness here." I said "I was gonna lock it."

Then the girl interrupted the conversation, got in between us and said "I don't want anything from YOU!" I realized she was showing her cleverness at the homonym, "I was gonna lock it" was the same as "I was gone, a locket."

So I threw it in a certain particular drawer where it belongs and changed into the other person.

Later her step dad was asking, why had she said "I don't want anything from you," and a moment later was really friendly.

I explained a bit about how I sort of play acted being a ghost of her dad, and he said "Yeah but that's ethereal. That's here today gone tomorrow, it's nothing." I felt like my feet were turning into roots and I said "I'm deeply rooted. Do you wanna fight?"

To his credit, because he was twice as big as me and twice as strong, he backed away saying "I don't know what you're capable of."

Years later he told me of the feelings he had had raising this girl as his step daughter, and she had a tiny bicycle, and he never had been able to bring himself to throw it away, as with her special needs she had been really kind of reckless and courageous with the little bicycle, and he took me to a barn to show me where he kept it.
